Petition for Extended Library Hours at Maplewood Community Library
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the current limited operating hours at Maplewood Community Library. The library currently closes at 6 PM on weekdays and 4 PM on weekends, making it difficult for working families, students, and evening shift workers to access essential services. Over 60% of our community works standard business hours, leaving them with less than two hours after work to utilize library resources.
To: Maplewood City Council and Library Board
We respectfully petition the Maplewood City Council and Library Board to extend library hours until 8 PM on weekdays and 6 PM on weekends. This action would provide equal access to educational resources, internet services, and community programs for all residents regardless of their work schedules.
Why This Matters
- Community Impact: Extended hours would serve an additional 2,500 residents who currently cannot access library services due to work conflicts
- Long-term Benefits: Improved literacy rates, better homework support for children, and increased digital inclusion for families without home internet
- Urgency: The upcoming school year starts in six weeks, and many students depend on library computers and study spaces for academic success
Proposed Solutions
- Extend weekday hours from 6 PM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday
- Extend weekend hours from 4 PM to 6 PM on Saturdays and Sundays
- Hire two additional part-time staff members to cover extended evening shifts
Supporting Evidence
A recent community survey showed 78% of respondents support extended hours. Similar libraries in neighboring Oakville and Riverside saw 40% increases in usage after extending evening hours. The Springfield Library system reported improved community satisfaction scores and increased youth program participation following similar changes.
Conclusion
We believe that extending library hours is not only necessary but achievable with community support. We urge the City Council and Library Board to take immediate action and work with our community to implement these changes by September 1st, 2025.
